That is so wonderful how your gratitude journal healed not only your relationship with your mother, but your entire family, as well. I've just started doing a gratitude journal again, and this story inspires me to continue with it! :)

Mary, when I was a child my mother emotionally abused both my brother and myself. Even when we were in our 30's we were both still scared of her. When I was in my 40's I came across the idea of a gratitude journal. It suggested that every day you pick a different person and write at least 10 things you are grateful for. I kept putting off 'doing' my mother but eventually I did. Once I got started I realised that actually there were endless things Mum had done that I was grateful for. This resulted in my sending her a present to say thank you which she kept in a special place until she died some 15 years later. She was still a very difficult person, but as a result in my change of attitude, my brother's attitude improved too and the whole family dynamic improved. This all come about because of the idea of a gratitude journal - which writing this is reminding me I should doing start again!!

Thanks so much for the encouraging words, Stephanie! :) I truly do hope that the time has come for gratitude coaching. It really feels like something that I need to do.

What a lovely post, Mary. I too engage daily in a gratitude practice. You might say it's my way of prayer. Gratitude coaching -- now I like the sound of that and in spite of my current practice, there were times in my life when I hurt so much, that I used to Google things like "uplifting quotes," "gratitude practices," -- something that might bring relief. And as you know, gratitude does bring relief and comfort, so the idea of a coach is an idea whose time has come. Imagine if doctors had in their tool box the ability to prescribe a recording of gratitude techniques or a pill. May your gratitude coaching unfold along with the rest of your dreams.
